Discover Creativity, Innovation, and Community at the Huerfano Maker Convention

The Huerfano Maker Convention is almost here! On Saturday, December 7th, join us for a dynamic celebration of creativity, innovation, and community building in Walsenburg, Colorado. This one-day event will showcase local makers, artists, and creatives, while connecting participants with the broader Southern Colorado creative network.

A Collaborative Effort

This year’s Maker Convention is made possible through a partnership between the Museum of Friends, Spanish Peaks Library District, Wheelhouse Makerspace, and local educators, artists, and makers. Together, these organizations are building a platform to celebrate and foster the creativity, ingenuity, and community spirit that define Huerfano County.

What to Expect

The Maker Convention spans two venues, offering a variety of exciting activities for all ages:

Morning Events (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM)

Location: Spanish Peaks Library, 415 Walsen Ave

  • 9:30 AM: STEAM Talk

    • Dive into the power of STEAM education with insights from the Wheelhouse Library Lab Pilot Program, the importance of partnerships, and their impact on community development.

  • 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM: STEM Lab & Virtual Reality Gaming

    • Experience hands-on, innovative STEM-based Wheelhouse Library Lab projects, and immerse yourself in the world of Virtual Reality Gaming with the Fox Theater.

  • 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Workshop:“Writing Memoir to Create Communal History in .Huerfano”

    • Facilitated by the talented Val D. Phillips, this workshop invites participants to reflect and write about the stories that shape our unique community.

Afternoon Events (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM)

Location: Museum of Friends, 600 Main St

  • 1:00 – 4:00 PM: Maker Market & Demonstrations

    • Explore a vibrant market featuring handmade creations, including baked goods, goat cheese, skincare products, handsculpted jewelry, and other unique items perfect for gift giving this holiday season.

    • Don’t miss the art sale with works from the Made in Walsenburg Gift Shop and other talented local artists.

  • 1:30 PM: Featured Speaker – Jean Latka

    • Join Pueblo artist Jean Latka, co-founder of Trees Please, as she discusses the transformative power of public art and its role in strengthening communities and boosting local economies.

  • 3:00 – 4:00 PM: Writing Toward Well-Being Workshop

    • Led by Heather R. Hernandez, this interactive workshop explores storytelling and expressive writing as tools for emotional balance, creativity, and personal growth.

    • What to bring: Paper, pen, and a mat or blanket for grounding exercises.
