2018: AiR, Scott Pfaffman
The Museum of Friends partnered with nationally recognized sculptor Scott Pfaffman for Mixing It Up at Miner’s Plaza, a site-specific public art intervention in downtown Walsenburg. Initiated as part of Maria Cocchiarelli-Berger’s Colorado Change Leader project, and in collaboration with Rural Policy Connector Mary Hoffman, the project transformed an underused public space into a vibrant site for creativity and dialogue.
Pfaffman’s large-scale sculptural installation—constructed from recycled materials and everyday objects—invited the community to interact with art in unexpected ways. The project explored how play, experimentation, and creativity can reimagine shared environments and spark civic revitalization.
Workshops, community questionnaires, and collaborative making sessions gave youth, artists, and residents a voice in envisioning the future of Miner’s Plaza. Local collaborators, including Harold Vargas and Ione Glumac, joined the effort to design sculptures and solar light installations from materials donated by area businesses.
Over two weeks, Pfaffman worked closely with local organizations, artisits, and youth to demonstrate how art can foster belonging, inspire imagination, and drive social change. The project not only activated Miner’s Plaza but also laid the groundwork for future initiatives such as Public Health is a Puzzle.
